The school edifice was constructed in 1882. The youth dormitory annex was finished and opened in 1990. The secondary medical school has been housed in the building since 1953. During its existence, the school has educated several generations of health care workers, offered a variety of courses in different forms of educational programmes, and has been attended by students from a wide region. This is still the case today.
The school edifice with a youth dormatory annex is situated in the centre of the old part of the town within easy reach of long-distance and public bus and train transport. The school uses modernised buildings from the second half of the 19th century and the recently completed youth dormitory annex, which offer a pleasant environment with their interiors and park-like surroundings. The accommodation is category 1, and the school has its own catering facilities providing all day meals.
Since 1953 medical courses have been taught in various forms of educational programmes. Currently, four four-year diploma courses for primary school graduates can be studied at the secondary school: 78-42-M/04 Medical Lyceum, 53-41-M/04 Healthcare Massage Therapist, 53-41-M/03 Practical Nurse, 53-41-M/02 Nutrition Assistant. There are also two three-year diploma courses in higher vocational education, 53-41-N/1 Registered General Nurse and 53-41-N/2 Registered Children's Nurse.
